Popular culture has embraced cooking as an enjoyable pastime and valuable skill. Particularly with the rise in popularity of shows like Master Chef and My Kitchen Rules, creating food to share with friends and family has become a strong element in how we use our time and develop skills in the kitchen.
Everyone loves a good party, especially when it has a great dress up theme. The highlight of a birthday party has to be the cake! Reveling over its creation, and sharing a piece with friends and family, it reminds us how nice it is to give and receive gifts, but equally, how nice it is to create a gift for someone. |

BEFORE YOU GET IN THE KITCHEN
BASIC HYGIENE
Hygiene in the kitchen is really important, especially as you are often making food to share with other people. It also helps prevent cross contamination which can cause you to feel ill or make other's sick when they eat the food. |
|
GENERAL KITCHEN AND COOKING HYGIENE
There is less of a risk for cross contamination when cooking a cake, as you are using fewer ingredients and aren't working with raw meat.
Watch the video below for a good introduction to kitchen hygiene and what you need to consider and remember if you were to cook your family dinner

GETTING MORE ADVANCED - SKILLS
GETTING A BIT MORE ADVANCED WITH LAYERING CAKES AND ICING
This video is a little more technical and is a good source for inspiration for later on in the project. As well as using a butter cream frosting, this video also uses fondant - a thick, dense icing that would would have encountered on a traditional christening cake or Christmas cake. It can be rolled out with a rolling pin, and laid over the cake instead of being applied with a knife or spatula.

ARRANGING CAKES INTO SHAPES
ARRANGING YOUR CAKES
TYPE OF CAKE What cake does your target market enjoy? what shapes do you need to make? A basic sponge cake (any flavour) is usually the easiest to layer. NUMBER OF CAKES: how many cakes will you need to cook to make your design? look at the image above? baking a cake, letting cool and arranging it before icing can take a bit of time. Think about how to get the most out of the cake shape you make, to save you having to cook too many cakes ARRANGEMENT: Small pieces of cake become crumbly and fall apart, how can you cut and arrange each section of cake to make the final shape you need? |
USING TEMPLATES
TEMPLATES
HELPING YOU PLAN Before you start cutting into your cake, develop a plan for how you need to cut your cake, what size each component is, and how many cakes you will need. Sketch this first, and get it right on your template, as this will guide your design. DETERMINING THE SIZE: Making a template will help to clarify what shape of cake tin you need to use, and the size and quantity of cakes. USE WHAT YOU HAVE: Depending on what the template is for, will depend on the material used to create it. Old cereal boxes are great, as one side is draw-able cardboard, while the other is covered in a plastic film, so it won't slide around on the cake as you trace out your shape. Baking paper works well to place over a shape drawn on paper if you need to pee off your creation later: such as melted chocolate or lollies joined with icing. |
CREATING DETAILS FOR YOUR THEMED CAKE
USING DIFFERENT INGREDIENTS FOR YOUR CAKE PROPS
Different ingredients can be used to help create the props LOLLIES: Lollies come in so many different colours, shapes, sizes, textures and consistencies. Use what you can find to help you create the effects you need for each of your cake decoration pieces; known as 'props' look at what you notice in the images above. What has been used to create each element? Some use licorice cut into stripes, others use a marshmallow sliced into sections. BISCUITS: Different biscuits can be used to create the brim of a hat, wheels on a train or car, or windows in a space ship. Think about the colours, textures and sizes you need for each element. What could you use? PROP SUPPORTS: Many of your props will need supporting. Think of toothpicks or skewers to hold up a hat, or a pretzel! Or you could use a piece of wire to support popcorn to make steam puffs (like the train cake above). Use what you have at home, but remember, these items are going into edible food, so much be thoroughly cleaned! Be careful how you use non-edible elements of your cake though - make sure someone won't accidentally take a bite end end up with a toothpick in their mouth! |
CREATING PACKAGING
Packaging Nets
Packaging, when opened up flat is called a net. Cardboard is often used to produce packaging as it is recyclable, easily printed on, can be folded and glued easily, and can be stacked on shelves when the product is displayed in a shop. TASK: Using the net provided to you by your teacher, develop a packaging design that presents your cake. Your cake box dimensions are: 255mm x 255mm x 100mm You may like to include in your packaging design: - A display window (so people can see your cake) - Branding or graphics relating to your cake theme - Your company logo - A ingredients panel - A nutritional panel (optional) Think about your colour scheme. How does it relate to your theme, sell your cake and make people want to buy yours! DURATION: 3 lessons |
DEVELOPING YOUR RECIPE CARD
